Evangelical Christian leaders, who have been working closely with senior Republican lawmakers to place conservative judges in the federal courts, have also been exploring ways to punish sitting jurists and even entire courts viewed as hostile to their cause.
This is chilling stuff. The article goes on to describe how Bill Frist and Tom DeLay are even more hard-core in private talking to their supporters than they are on TV. The idea that a Republican Congress would starve particular courts for funds, or even simply legislate away a whole Circuit court is just mind-boggling. But these guys are so sure they're right they are willing to do anything. Stuff like this makes it a little easier to see that our democracy is not something we should take for granted. Theocrats like DeLay would do nearly anything in the name of God and moral righteousness, even if it meant suspending the Constitution, with promises of a new, better government dedicated to protecting God's will. Crazy? When did you think you'd hear elected officials talk about getting rid of judges they don't like, or simply doing away with an independent branch of government?
